Opinions about AI

In the same way that TV content discourages storytelling skills in viewers, AI work will use previous inspiration to disincentivize the process of exploration and invention – which are not efficient, but are required to create something superior.

The act of struggling towards creating is how skill is built. If we remove all of the struggle, such that usage does not require a competent user, we are guaranteed to introduce atrophy in our ability to think, be inspired, and make excellence, no matter how good our intentions.

It’s a conundrum – one has struggle at successive, more difficult, but menial/repetitive creative and thinking tasks to be good enough to use this kind of automation. But the automation itself gives no incentive to the users to maintain this struggle required to be a good judge of ’the work'.

The tool de-incentivizes that development, not remove it or block the ability for AI to be an enhancement. However, that requires someone willing to not automate part of the process and have the discipline to scaffold with AI, rather than replace a task entirely.

But unfortunately, the market and most people don’t want a nuanced conversation – they’re too used to the A/B options and that someone tells them what to choose.

Usually, no one does more work unless they have to, even if the payout is disproportionately better. Our times certainly confirm that people are looking for services that save them from having to think for themselves. That is not necessarily wise, but it’s usually how it plays out.

As for AI replacing developers, we are still decades away from that. AI right now is about prompting, generating and analyzing code but that’s still just a fraction of what a developer does. You need someone to create a coherent whole. Rather than replacing developers, I see productivity shooting up and as a result, feature sets increasing alongside. The net result is more software being delivered with the same amount of developers.

The day that AI decides to build something unprompted, with its own agenda, is the day to start worrying.

The worst part is the idiots that believe AI slop nonsense will not care that it’s proven fake. As long as it maps onto what they truly believe, they don’t care because “well someone probably does it”. The worst part about AI popping off in this era is that the truth doesn’t matter to a significant portion of the global population.
